A terror was coming for her
A wonderful ending to the McKenzie Ridge series. Jessie & Blake have been fighting their attraction all series. We knew they had hidden secrets and living with pain. This is their story and what a story it is. Blake is a smoking hot protector. Jessie is rude, crude, and tells it how it is (love her). I love this series with a group of friends who are very close and take care of each other through everything. Wonderfully written with depth to the characters, dialogue, and the plot. Stephanie delivers everything we expect from her: comedy, smoking hot romance, angst, secrets, pain, suspense, an epic twist you won’t see coming, healing hearts, and a Happily Ever After. The entire series is a must read.
Entirely annoyed by his constant presence, Jessie had enough to worry about without Blake’s insistent hovering. If she couldn’t get him to leave her alone, she could at least have a little fun pissing him off. So, she floored it.
When he matched her speed, she went faster, traveling at an unsafe speed, even if it was a desolate back road that ran on the outside of town. If a deer were to jump in front of her now, it could end tragically.
It didn’t take long before Blake flipped on his lights and blipped his siren at her a few times to get her attention. Giddiness coursed through her when she pulled over, tossing up a little extra dust that he would have to walk through to get to her car. Given the look on his face in the rearview, she was already under his skin.
“What are you doing?” With his hands on the roof of her car, he leaned in, giving her a nice gun show while he attempted to scold her.
“Driving to work, you?”
With a long stare, he bit his bottom lip, trying to maintain his cool. “You were going eighty in a fifty mile an hour zone. You late?”
“That’s a little personal, don’t you think? What kind of man asks a woman if she’s late?” Impressed with her ability to keep a straight face, Jessie was laughing on the inside. This should make him nice and uncomfortable, she thought.
“How is that rude?” he asked full of bewilderment.
“Asking a woman if she’s late is so…so…personal. My cycle is none of your business, Blake Cooper!”
His jaw dropped and eyes widened as crimson red stained his cheeks. That was a first. “Are you kidding me, Jessie. You know what I meant! Late to work! You were speeding.”
“Oh! Well, why didn’t you say so? Nope, not late for work,” she said, “Just being followed…by a stalker.”
Quick to push himself off her car, he rested his hand on his weapon while he looked up and down the street. Knowing full well that she really did have a stalker, he wasn’t taking her comments lightly…until she snorted.
“Yes, been following me since I left my driveway – real asshole! Riding my ass and everything!”
Tilting his head to the side, his eyes tightened when he realized that she was referring to him as her stalker. The asshole. She knew how to get under his skin quick, in a bad way, and he couldn’t help but come back for more. Over and over again.
“Keep it at Fifty, or I’ll fine you,” he said, tapping the top of her car.
“Yes, sir, Officer Coooooper.” She said, dragging out his name in a way that was both flirtatious and sarcastic.
She turned his way and raised her brow, waiting for him to say whatever he had left to say.
With a lascivious grin he said, “You’ll know when I’m riding your ass…Jessica.”
Shocked by his claim, she wasn’t sure if it was a threat or a promise. Since she didn’t feel threatened, she found herself hoping it was a promise, given the flutter in her belly and the tingle everywhere else.
Blake was still grinning when Jessie looked in her mirror at him after pulling back onto the road. He was clearly pleased with himself as he should be. It was usually Jessie pulling the one-line shock and awe banter.
“Well played, Blake Cooper, well played.”
